HER STORY: Girl Scouts of Greater New York’s Troop 6000

Giselle Burgess turned her personal experience of homelessness into a powerful mission to uplift young girls. In 2016, while living in a shelter, Giselle founded Troop 6000, a first-of-its-kind Girl Scout troop for girls living in New York City’s shelter system. Troop 6000 creates a supportive space for girls to develop their curiosity, confidence, leadership, and interpersonal skills. Today, this program continues to serve hundreds of girls across New York City, and thousands more across the country that have adopted the model, demonstrating how one woman’s unwavering belief in the power of girls can change the world.

GlassBreaker Award

Amplify Her Foundation’s annual GlassBreaker Award recognizes women trailblazers and pioneers who have made significant contributions to driving social change and advancing women’s leadership. Valerie Jarrett is Chief Executive Officer and a member of the board of directors of the Obama Foundation. She is the author of the New York Times bestselling book Finding My Voice: My Journey to the West Wing and the Path Forward. Ms. Jarrett was the Senior Advisor to President Barack Obama from 2009-2017 making her the longest serving senior advisor in history. She oversaw the Offices of Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs and Chaired the White House Council on Women and Girls. Ms. Jarrett has received numerous awards and honorary degrees, including TIME’s “100 Most Influential People” Award. Jarrett received her B.A. from Stanford University in 1978 and her J.D. from University of Michigan Law School in 1981.
